GCSE

I offer 1-1 private maths tuition for the new 9-1 GCSE maths qualification, examined for the first time in 2017.

This qualification is significantly different to its predecessor. For all exam boards, the specification is much bigger - so much so that some schools now start GCSE maths in year 9 (Key Stage 3) instead of year 10, in order to get through all the topics.

Whether the goal is to move up a set, work towards a grade 4/5 or secure a top grade to study A Level maths at college, a 1-1 maths tutor can help to build confidence and keep on top of the material being taught in school.

New Maths Curriculum

In 2015 the government made major changes to GCSE maths. Here is a summary of the changes:

  • More demanding for everyone.

  • Greater content & harder topics introduced.

  • Greater emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

  • Total examination time increased.

  • Linear exams taken at the end of the course.

  • Memorization of formulae necessary.

  • Grade structure from 9 to 1.

  • More marks awarded for more challenging questions.
